Ragdolls are known for their laid-back personalities, striking blue eyes, and luxurious fur, but like any breed, they can be prone to certain health issues. While they’re generally a hardy and healthy breed, there are some common genetic conditions that can pop up in Ragdolls. At Rarity Ragdolls, we take pride in our commitment to testing every breeding cat to ensure these problems aren’t passed on to future generations. Here’s a closer look at the health issues that can affect Ragdolls and what we do to prevent them.
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
- Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
- Bladder Stones
- Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)
- Dental Issues
One of the most well-known conditions in Ragdolls is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). It’s a heart condition where the walls of the heart thicken, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. This is a genetic issue, and unfortunately, it’s pretty common in Ragdolls. If left undetected, it can lead to heart failure or sudden death.
At Rarity Ragdolls, we perform genetic testing for the HCM mutation in all our breeding cats. Any cat carrying the gene is excluded from our breeding program, which greatly reduces the risk of this serious condition in our kittens.
PKD is another genetic condition, although it’s less common in Ragdolls compared to other breeds like Persians. It causes cysts to form in the kidneys, which can eventually lead to kidney failure. Cats can live for many years without showing symptoms, but regular vet checks and early diagnosis are crucial.
We make sure to test our breeding cats for PKD so our kittens start life on the healthiest possible footing.
Ragdolls are prone to developing bladder stones, which can cause discomfort, urinary problems, and even lead to blockages in more severe cases. While not strictly a genetic issue, diet and hydration play a big role. We work closely with our vet to ensure that our breeding cats—and the kittens they produce—are eating a balanced diet that promotes urinary health.
FIP is a viral disease that can affect many cats, but certain breeds like Ragdolls seem to be more susceptible. It’s caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. While there isn’t a direct genetic test for susceptibility to FIP, we take every possible measure to keep our cattery environment clean and stress-free, reducing the risk of outbreaks.
Some Ragdolls may be more prone to dental issues, like gingivitis or periodontal disease, due to their genetics. Good dental care is key to preventing these problems, and we start our kittens off right by promoting a healthy diet and providing them with proper care from an early age.
At Rarity Ragdolls, the health of our cats is our top priority. That’s why we go the extra mile by testing every single breeding cat for these genetic issues. Not only does this ensure healthier kittens, but it also gives our future Ragdoll owners peace of mind, knowing that their new furry family member comes from a strong and healthy line. When you choose a Rarity Ragdoll, you’re not just getting a beautiful cat—you’re getting one with a clean bill of health from the start!
