Every Ragdoll’s appearance is shaped by a temperature-sensitive gene, which causes their points (ears, face, tail, and legs) to be darker than the rest of their body. This gene means kittens are born white and develop their full color as they grow. Heat also plays a role — their extremities are cooler, so the pigment develops darker there, while warmer areas like the chest and stomach stay lighter.

Patterns like mitted, bicolor, lynx, and tortie add even more variety, and white spotting can dramatically change a cat’s look. Some Ragdolls even carry rare color genes such as silver, cinnamon, or the dominant white gene that creates a Blue-Eyed White.

The Classic Ragdoll Colors

  • Seal Point Ragdoll – The original Ragdoll color, with rich dark brown points that almost look black.

  • Blue Ragdoll – A diluted version of seal, with cool gray-blue points.

  • Chocolate Ragdoll – Warm milk-chocolate points.

  • Lilac Ragdoll – The dilute of chocolate, appearing as frosty lavender-gray.

Red Ragdolls: Why Orange Cat Lovers Adore Them

Rare and Unique Colors

  • Cinnamon Ragdoll – A warm, reddish-brown point color. Rare in Ragdolls because the gene must be inherited from both parents.
  • Fawn Ragdoll – A dilute of cinnamon, appearing as a soft beige.

  • Blue-Eyed White (BEW) Ragdoll – The dominant white gene masks any underlying color, leaving a striking pure white coat with blue eyes.

Smoke & Silver Cats – An Overview

  • Silver Ragdoll – Caused by the silver inhibitor gene, which lightens the base coat and gives a shimmering effect.

  • Smoke Ragdoll – Solid coat lightened at the roots, often giving a misty appearance.

Patterns That Shape the Look

  • Colorpoint – The classic pointed look with no white spotting.

  • Mitted – White paws (“mittens”), white chin, and often a blaze on the nose.

  • Bicolor – Inverted “V” on the face, white legs, and a white belly.

  • Van – Mostly white with color limited to the ears, tail, and sometimes spots on the back.

  • Lynx – Tabby striping over the points.

  • Tortie – Patchwork of red or cream mixed with another base color.

Cherubim, Solid & Sepia Ragdolls

Understanding Traditional, Cherubim, Sepia & Solid Ragdolls: A Clear Guide

  • Cherubim Ragdoll (formerly called Mink): Medium-shaded coat with a silky, even color and striking aqua or teal eyes. Born with color instead of white, Cherubims look richer than traditional Ragdolls.

  • Sepia Ragdoll: The darkest variety, with deep, velvet-like coats and eyes that range from gold to green. Sepias are rare and stand out for their dramatic coloring.

  • Solid Ragdoll: Full-body color with no points at all. Solids can be black, blue, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, red, or cream, and their eyes are usually green or gold.
